The Top of the World, with Don Geiss

A disturbing dream, in which I was two characters at once. I woke up in a cold sweat, and am so very confused...

There was a young girl, who fell in love with Don Geiss (the founder and CEO of NBC from 30 Rock). Except, this Don was a disheveled and lonely Don. He was a broken man with all the riches in the world and no one to share them with. He found joy in spending time with this young girl, who reminded him so much of the daughter he had once lost. He told her stories of his travels, his business, his legacy. He relived the past through the present in conversation with her. She was his last morsel of happiness. There was just so much pain in his soul.

They sat on the steps of a plaza on an uppermost level of a high rise building (do those exist?). The sun was setting on the horizon and it was warm despite the light breezes. The conversation paused, and she leaned back on the step and gazed happily along the outline of the buildings against the orange sky. He smiled upon her, and then his smile faded away as he saw the sparkle in her eyes when she turned to look at him.

The girl didn't see the pain in Don's soul. Rather, through her naivety, she saw the success and power, and the envy of others around Don. She saw a man who gave her undivided attention when he gave attention to no others. She saw the gifts, the elegant diction, the impressive suits, and the authority. She sat up there on the rooftop, completely satisfied to be in the presence of a man so exclusive to her.

There was also a man in the corner of her eye, slightly above herself and Don, who seemed to be watching the sunset too. He was a well-dressed man, in a suit, but the angle made it hard to tell who he was or what he was really doing. She returned her attention to Don, and she asked him to tell her more about his daughter. There was nothing she enjoyed more than hearing him speak. It didn't matter what he said, or how he said it, she adored every bit of anything he could say.

He looked off into the distance and the sun was beginning to disappear. She looked too, and suddenly, a shockingly cold breeze traveled through her. Just as she looked up, she saw the body of the man above fall into the loop of a noose. It bounced once, twice, and then hung motionless. She panicked, looked at Don, and screamed for him to LOOK! She screamed and screamed wildly, and he would not look. He kept his distanced gazed straight-ahead while she cried hysterically, until his face fell into his hands. He would not look.

The girl realizes the man was Don.
